Royal splendour with a long history
In the 17th and the 18th centuries, much of the island served as royal hunting grounds. To prevent the wildlife from the wildlife from escaping over to the farmer´s land, as wall was built across the island, nortn of the southernmost cape of Öland.
Solliden Castle
Solliden is the sumemr residence of the Swedish Royal Family, amd the Royal family visits it many times a year. The mediterranean-inspires castle was buil in 1906, ordered by Queen Victoria on advice of her doctor, Axel Munthe. According to him, Öland´s many hours of sunshine and its air, rich in oxygen, would do her a world of good. Today´s Royals also enjoy the sunshine on Öland.
Solliden Castle is open to visitors during the entire summer season. Guests can enjoy by themselves. Café croft, castle shed and an art pavilion with different exhibits.
Victoria day, July 14
The birthday of Crown Princess Victoria, July 14 is a time of great celebration on Öland. The royal family is present, numerous artists perform and the coveted Victoria- stipendiatet sports prize is presented
